What is GSI and how does it rate poker tournament structures?

GSI — Global Structure Index — is an independent index dedicated to rating live poker tournament structures.

Each eligible structure is analyzed by the GSI Intelligence Engine and receives a GSI Score.

The objective is simple: turn a poker tournament structure into something players can read and understand using a consistent measurement framework.

What does GSI measure in a poker tournament structure?

GSI measures the published tournament structure itself.

Several structural components are analyzed by an engine frozen for the season, using the same rules for every tournament structure.

Same structure. Same engine. Same rules.

What does GSI not measure?

GSI does not rate the casino, the organizer, the field, the prize pool or the player experience.

GSI rates the tournament structure — not the event around it.

Does the buy-in affect the GSI Score?

No.

A €100 tournament and a €10,000 tournament are evaluated using exactly the same structural rules.

The buy-in amount has zero weight in the GSI rating.

Why are some poker tournaments not rated by GSI?

To receive a GSI Score, a tournament structure must be complete and contain enough playing levels to be analyzed consistently.

Some variants, mixed games or special formats may therefore appear in the calendar without a GSI rating.

Why can two different poker tournament structures have the same GSI Score?

The GSI Score is measured over the first 20 playing levels, excluding breaks.

If two tournament structures are identical over those levels, everything measured by GSI is identical — so their GSI Score is identical, even if their blind schedules differ later.

This is deliberate.

The same measured structure must always produce the same score.

Does GSI analyze the entire poker tournament structure?

No.

GSI analyzes the first 20 playing levels, excluding breaks, and nothing beyond that point.

Using the same standardized evaluation window allows tournament structures with different formats and durations to be measured consistently.

We prefer to state the scope clearly rather than claim to measure something GSI does not analyze.

How are tied poker tournament structures ranked?

Structures with the same GSI Score share the same rank, and the following rank is skipped according to standard competition ranking.

For example, if two structures are tied for first place, both rank first. There is no second place, and the next structure ranks third.

Breaking a genuine tie would mean inventing a difference GSI did not measure.

How is the GSI Score calculated?

The GSI Intelligence Engine calculates the score from several measured components of the poker tournament structure.

Every eligible structure is processed through the same scoring framework for that season.

Exact formulas, weightings and thresholds remain proprietary.

Can a GSI Score change?

Only if the underlying structure data is corrected or completed.

The GSI Intelligence Engine is frozen for the season, ensuring that structures within the same season are evaluated consistently.

A new season may use a new engine, applied consistently to every structure in that season.

A closed season is never recalculated.

What do the GSI stars and labels mean?

Stars and labels provide a faster visual reading of the GSI Score.

The system uses a seven-star scale with proportional fill, together with a label ranging from Turbo to Skill.

The numerical GSI Score remains the primary rating.

What is the GSI World Structure Award?

The World Structure Award is GSI's annual distinction recognizing the best-rated poker tournament structures of the year.

Eligibility and results are based solely on published GSI Scores.

No application. No entry fee.

The published GSI ranking alone determines the result.

What does “Award Eligible” mean?

Award Eligible means that a tournament structure has reached the eligibility threshold for the current year's World Structure Award.

The distinction applies exclusively to the tournament structure.

It is not a rating of the festival, casino or organizer.

When will the World Structure Award 2026 be announced?

The World Structure Award 2026 is based on the frozen GSI Scores of the 2026 season.

Results will be published in early January.

How can I report an error in a poker tournament structure?

Send GSI the officially published tournament structure as a URL, PDF or document.

Every correction is checked against the original source before the structure is recalculated.

Accurate source data is essential to an accurate GSI Score.

Can an organizer pay for a better GSI Score or ranking?

No.

No commercial offer, partnership or payment can influence the GSI calculation, score or ranking.

The same scoring rules apply to every tournament structure.
